Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is a widely used technology for personal assistants that are used in various business fields/areas. This technology works on the speech provided by the user breaks it down for proper understanding and processes it accordingly.

It involves processing natural language datasets, such as text corpora or speech corpora, using either rule-based or probabilistic (i.e. statistical and, most recently, neural network-based) machine learning approaches. The technology can then accurately extract information and insights contained in the documents as well as categorize and organize the documents themselves.

As Large Language Models (LLM) become increasingly popular and powerful, my lab has its eyes set on the vast landscape of LLM research and their diverse applications. We are currently evaluating the performance of models such as GPT-4 and LLaMA on several clinical and biomedical tasks. Analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, we plan to focus on crafting systems that can surpass the limitations of current models and achieve remarkable advancements in healthcare applications. Dr. Hua Xu is a widely recognized researcher in clinical natural language processing (NLP).
